Dry needling is a treatment technique used in many physiotherapy practices. It requires post graduate training and has been modified from the better known Eastern medicine acupuncture techniques.
Dry needling is done with fine gauge acupuncture needles and directly targets the tight muscle and fascial structures to improve muscle tone, decrease fascial restrictions and improve circulation and lymph flow to the treated area. The technique has also been shown to reduce pain.
The needles have an effect via both mechanical and neurological reflex loops and have been shown to change the biochemistry of the treated areas. The treatment technique can be very effective in managing chronically tight muscles resulting from poor posture. It is an adjunct treatment to a good rehabilitation program that will enable more long term relief from the symptoms.
